How to Lower Your Energy Bills This Summer

Energy efficient home cooling tips

Florida summers are known for intense heat and humidity, which means your air conditioner works overtime to keep your home comfortable. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to reduce your cooling costs without sacrificing comfort. Here are practical tips from our HVAC experts to help you save energy and money this summer.

1. Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

A well-maintained air conditioner runs more efficiently than a neglected one. Dirty coils, clogged filters, and low refrigerant levels force your system to work harder, consuming more electricity. An annual tune-up ensures your system is clean, properly charged, and running at peak efficiency. Regular maintenance often pays for itself in energy savings.

2. Change Your Air Filter Regularly

A dirty air filter restricts airflow, making your AC run longer and use more energy. In Florida's dusty environment, check your filter monthly and replace it at least every 60 to 90 days. If you have pets or allergies, consider changing it even more frequently. A clean filter also improves indoor air quality.

3. Use a Programmable Thermostat

Raising your thermostat by just a few degrees when you are away from home can lead to significant savings. A programmable or smart thermostat automatically adjusts temperatures based on your schedule. We recommend setting your thermostat to 78 degrees when you are home and higher when you are away.

4. Seal Air Leaks Around Your Home

Cool air escaping through gaps around windows, doors, and ductwork wastes energy and money. Use weatherstripping and caulk to seal leaks, and have your ductwork inspected for holes or disconnected sections. Proper sealing helps your conditioned air stay where it belongs.

5. Use Ceiling Fans to Supplement Cooling

Ceiling fans do not actually lower the temperature, but they create a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler. This allows you to raise your thermostat setting by about 4 degrees without noticing a difference in comfort. Just remember to turn fans off when you leave the room.

6. Keep Heat Sources Away from Your Thermostat

Lamps, televisions, and appliances generate heat that can cause your thermostat to think the room is warmer than it actually is. Keep heat-producing items away from the thermostat so it reads the true temperature and cycles your AC appropriately.

7. Consider Upgrading to a High-Efficiency System

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it may be time to consider replacement. Modern systems with high SEER ratings use significantly less energy than older models. Combined with available rebates and financing options, upgrading can be a smart long-term investment.
